In Parasol Protectorate, Carriger’s trademark sense of humor was what made the series stand out, but there was also some substance underneath, and the plots kept me engaged and interested. It took me a while to put my thoughts in order and figure out exactly what went wrong, at least for me, and even now I can only explain a part of it. However, I don’t think Etiquette and Espionage was up to her usual standards, and it makes me very sad that I didn’t enjoy it as much as I’d hoped I would. The Parasol Protectorate series is a favorite of mine, despite losing some steam in the later installments. 2.5 stars, rounded up because I'm feeling particularly generous today.īefore any of you start plotting my painful and untimely death, I should point out that I’m a big fan of Ms. ![]()

And so I have spent three weeks reading Mark Trehorne’s lucid translation of The Guermantes Way, the third volume in the Penguin series. I recently felt the urge to read Proust after weeks of light-ish reading. Now here I am, many years later–reading in a pandemic. Davis writes beautifully and also has a sense of humor. In 2013, I finally connected with Proust through Lydia Davis’s lyrical translation of Swann’s Way, the first volume in the Penguin Classics edition of In Search of Lost Time. I have had better luck with the new-ish Penguin translations of In Search of Lost Time, where even humor comes across. ![]() There is not a lot of joking in the revised translations of Moncrieff by Terence Kilmarten and D. ![]() I have had a mixed experience with Proust. These excerpts were all the more necessary, as this really is a book about the personal-no further details of public significance are released in this title, which is a work primarily of analysis and reflection. It was genuinely interesting to get an insight into how someone might cope with this very unusual situation being thrust upon them in a more candid tone than we generally get from the guarded Snowden throughout the rest of the book. I.found it uncharacteristically satisfying that Permanent Record included a chapter composed of extracts from Lindsay Mills’s diary. ![]() 6/9/2023 0 Comments Ansel adams photos![]() ![]() ![]() By 1935 Ansel Adams had become world famous with is writings and images of Yosemite attracting publications world wide.
